How to Find Legal Help When You Can't Afford a Lawyer
Cheryl Holmes

Typically, when someone thinks of hiring an attorney, it’s usually followed by the thought: that’s expensive.

In a criminal proceeding, if you can’t afford legal assistance, a court will appoint an attorney for you. In a civil case, which basically means a dispute between two private parties, to get legal representation usually means paying for the service of an attorney, however not always.

The folks at have scoured the country for the best attorneys to offer up (as the name implies) free evaluations, so you can determine whether you have a case.

What Does a Free Case Evaluation Mean and What Does it Include?

An initial case evaluation or consultation with a personal injury lawyer will likely be a 30 to 60-minute meeting between the potential client and the attorney. The client will explain their situation, and why they are looking to retain legal counsel. The attorney will listen and give feedback to the individual as to whether or not they have a potential claim.

If you have documents available on the incident such as police reports and/or medical bills, it’s a good idea that you have those available for the attorney to review. If you are missing some relevant documents; don’t worry, you can always supply them later.

Reviewing the facts and essential documents together will allow the attorney to view the facts of the potential claim and ask relevant questions. It’s also a chance for both parties to see if they are a good fit for each other. Every lawyer has their style, which may or may not fit every client.

During the consultation, the attorney will explain any fees that the firm may charge. In the case of a personal injury case, most attorneys charge on a contingency fee, which is a type of payment for your attorney’s services– “contingent upon” your receiving some amount of compensation.  In other words, you don’t pay unless you win.

They will outline what the client can expect, should they choose to retain the attorney as their legal counsel. Even if you don’t hire that a particular attorney, your conversation with them is protected by attorney-client privilege.

A free case consultation is a chance for the attorney and client to meet and go over the potential claim. Take advantage of a free case consultation if you think you have a possible injury or wrongful death claim.

Finally, look for an attorney who focuses on the matter that is relevant to you. If it’s personal injury or wrongful death, look for an attorney with both experience and success.
